TOO MUCH SLEEP


Moderation is the answer to everything done in this life. Too much of anything is BAD! We have discussed the need for a nap the last time, in order that we do not burn out or die of tiredness but there again, when we sleep for too long, there seems to be consequences.

The research shows that it is good to sleep for a minimum of 6 hours maximum of 8 hours and not more during night times, in order to live long. I will not say much about sleeping for less than 6 hours because I know that anyone who constantly sleeps for less than 6 hours will realise at some point that they need more rest.

However, I believe that a person that sleeps for more than 8 hours daily is sleeping their lives away. How many hours do we have a day? A little sleep and a little slumber is the recommendation in life. It is said in an adage that those with dreams do not sleep; else they will sleep their dreams away.

Beware of sleeping for more than 8 hours as an adult on a daily basis, use your day to plan towards your next goal and walk your way to achieving it. But remember to take a 45 minutes nap at least during the day.

Imagine this simple calculation: A person that is 70 years old that has slept for about 9 hours a day plus nap actually slept has actually slept for 26.25 years of his life, almost half his/her life. If we do more than that, what time have we got to achieve our dreams?

Sleeping more than eight hours a night can kill you

Many of us spend our lives worrying we don’t get enough sleep – but sleeping too much could be even more dangerous.

University of Warwick researchers analysed 16 studies including sleep data for more than a million people.

Professor Franco Cappuccio found that people who sleep more than eight hours are at risk of dying earlier than those who sleep for six to eight hours.

Professor Cappuccio looked at long-term studies analysing the mortality of people according to how much they slept.

After ten years, 12% of people who slept less than six hours had died – but 30% of those who slept more than eight hours had died.

The increase in risk of death is equivalent to drinking several cups of coffee per day, the researchers warned.

Cappuccio corrected his data to account for people who are depressed, or using sleep medication – and believes that people who sleep more than eight hours per night may have a serious underlying illness which is causing them to sleep longer.
