Scientists turn cancer into healthy human blood cells

An accident in a university research lab could prove a vital breakthrough in the battle against cancer – causing deadly cancer cells to ‘grow up’ into healthy blood cells.

The new cells could be used in patient’s body to attack cancers – having been trained ‘like bloodhounds’ to hunt down the disease, the researchers believe.

A chance observation in Stanford University lab led to researchers discovering the reliable method to turn leukaemia cells into harmless immune cells.

Dr Ravi Majeti and his colleagues watched the process after collecting leukemia cells from a patient and trying to keep the cells alive in a culture plate.

‘We were throwing everything at them to help them survive,’ said Majeti.

Majeti and his team noticed that some of the cancer cells were changing shape and size – and turning into macrophages, powerful immune cells, when exposed to certain proteins.

Macrophages can engulf and digest cancer cells.

Majeti hopes that the ‘turned’ cells could be used to fight against cancer in the patient’s body – having been ‘trained’ like bloodhounds to the disctinctive chemical signals of the cancer.

‘Because the macrophage cells came from the cancer cells, they will already carry with them the chemical signals that will identify the cancer cells, making an immune attack against the cancer more likely,’ Majeti said.
